Bills
One of the array of words that is used loosely in a number of different ways concerning lawyers’ charging, e.g. “I bill at £x per hour”, “my bills total £y” or more technically “this is an interim bill” (the right is reserved to re-charge the work for the period of the bill at a different rate should circumstances dictate) or “this is a final bill” (it may not be the last bill but the amounts for that period will not be altered later).
Brussels I
Brussels I – an EU Regulation (BI) which provides that maintenance orders in one country can be enforced in another EU country simply and quickly. Not to be confused with Brussels II. Has just been replaced in 2008 by an EU Maintenance Regulation, see information pages, international finance and forum
Brussels II
An EU Regulation (BII) in force from 1 March 2001, revised and replaced in 2005, which harmonises all divorce jurisdiction across Europe. But crucially it introduced a EU wide law that the first spouse to issue a divorce petition in a country secures forum (below) for that spouse, which can be greatly to the disadvantage of the other spouse. Where a couple have a connection with two or more EU countries, very urgent advice is needed about where to issue – and quickly. The EU has produced an excellent practice guide to the Regulation, see the website links. See fact sheet on information pages, international finance and forum.
